Gem Centre

The Gem Centre plays a very active part in capacity building in the area, as although to be managed by the School as part of the Specialist Schools Status development plan for business and enterprise as their concept enterprise, it integrates all aspects of advice, support and guidance along with training opportunties across the community.

There are promotional opportunities for local residents, groups and organisations offering a wide range of services, i.e. community laundry, luncheon club, training, saving opportunites, general advice, volunteer recruitment, childcare services, small business and community voluntary social enterprise start up support and advice, health and fitness facilities and bookings for courses and taster sessions, advice on housing and debt counselling.

With the prime location on the main street – the centre gives exposure to all members of the community as an easy access ‘walk in’ centre. It encourages the development of enterprise and encourages links with local employers who, are actively encouraged to advertise vacancies from the site and for local organisations to promote volunteering (for example the BEACON group who were formed to support the school) and encourage community ownership and participation in order to ensure the project is sustainable for the future.

Internal and outside agencies have the opportunity to use the facility to offer drop in sessions for advice and guidance along with displaying promotional support literature, should individuals just wish to call in and pick up a leaflet or booklet. Community Wardens and PCSO’s have the opportunity to meet with groups and individuals informally or more formally to discuss issues and it is anticipated that more people would drop into the site that perhaps would access the Enterprise Centre due to the open access. As a one stop shop, parents are able to call in to find out what is happening in our school and other schools in the area and to see and purchase goods or services on sale some manufactured or provided on the school site. The Centre will promote even stronger links with all the key players in the area and a single site focusing on what is on offer for the members of the community. The Centre is there to encourage local people to become more involved in their own personal development and take responsibility for the development and improved image of the geographical area in which they and their families are educated, live and work.
